By day I'm a database administrator at the University of Bristol but in real life I'm involved in a number of things to do with traditional dance, music and song.
- Step dancing. I have been playing accordion to accompany English clog dancing for more years than I care to remember and I'm currently a musician for
I first started playing for clog dancing in the late 70's and was a musician for Greenwood Clog Dancers in Nottingham - which is where I met the boss. After moving to Bristol in 1985 Lynn joined Beetlecrushers and I played for them for a short period.
About 20 years ago Aly Bain made a series of films about fiddle music in North America. The programme about fiddling in Canada has footage of Joe Rankin dancing Cape Breton steps and nowadays that is what I spend my spare(?) time learning.
- Morris Dancing. I've been a dancer since the big Morris dance revival of the 1970's and I dance with and teach Pigsty Morris - based in Bristol. I dance Cotswold Morris - or, as some prefer, the Morris dances of the South Midlands. It's the sort where dancers have bells on their legs, wave handkerchiefs about and are often dressed in white shirts and trousers bedecked with ribbons. Pigsty wear distinctive green and red trousers.
I first started dancing in Nottingham with the wonderful Dolphin Morrismen and later, after moving house, with the Leicester Morris Men. Those sides were men only teams and some of us wished to do some dance stuff with our wives, many of whom were dancing with Greenwood Clog Dancers - so we started a North-West style Morris group called Sergeant Musgrave's Dance (after the great play by John Arden). All of the groups flourish still.
- Rapper Dance. I'm not a dancer but I have for some years been a musician for Insword Rapper who are based in Windsor but have members living in Canterbury and North Devon.
